More Than 20 Million American Jobs Could Be Automated by AI, MIT Study Finds

Artificial intelligence continues to reshape industries at a rapid pace, raising pressing questions about the future of work. A recent study conducted by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) suggests that today’s AI systems are already capable of automating tasks performed by over 20 million American workers, amounting to 11.7 percent of the U.S. labor force.

Understanding the Potential Impact of AI on Jobs

The MIT study analyzed a staggering 151 million American workers and identified which occupational tasks could be automated by AI. The researchers also estimated the dollar value of these tasks, revealing that approximately $1.2 trillion in wages could be affected. This figure highlights the immense potential disruption to the $9.4 trillion American labor market, while also presenting significant opportunities for businesses that implement automation successfully.

The researchers used the Iceberg Index, a tool co-developed by MIT and the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), to simulate AI’s impact across the entire U.S. workforce. The index models each worker as an autonomous agent executing thousands of skills, tracking interactions with numerous AI tools, and measuring the wage value of skills that AI can perform.

Currently, AI-related disruptions account for only about 2.2 percent of the labor market, equivalent to roughly $211 billion in wage value. However, researchers warn that this is just the “tip of the iceberg,” suggesting that AI could dramatically reshape employment in the near future.

The study’s findings underscore the urgency for policymakers to understand the potential effects of AI on employment. By quantifying the skills and occupations most vulnerable to automation, government officials can design targeted legislation, retraining programs, and social safety nets to support workers during this technological transition.
